For the third consecutive year, a decline in the sex ratio at the time of birth of children has been recorded in the capital Delhi. This is not us saying this, but the report is saying this. In the last few years, a huge difference has been observed in the sex ratio in the capital Delhi. Although Delhi government officials said that this decline is minor, health experts have expressed concern about it. They say that the number of pre-natal sex determination tests is increasing in the capital and the authorities should crack down on this.
What is the sex ratio figure?
According to data available from the Civil Registration System, 822 female births were recorded per 1000 males in 2005. At the same time, the sex ratio at birth was recorded at 898 in the year 2015, which increased to 933 in 2020. But since then it has been declining. In 2021 it was recorded at 932, in 2022 it decreased to 929 and in 2023 it became 922.
What came out in the report
According to the report, the infant mortality rate was recorded at 23.61 per 1,000 live births during 2023 as against 23.82 during 2022, while the maternal mortality rate was 0.45 per 1000 live births in 2023 as against 0.49 in 2022. The total number of registered births during 2023 was 3,15,087, while this number was 3,00,350 during 2022. The average number of births per day in Delhi in 2023 was 863 as against 823. The percentage of births in government hospitals was 64.56. At the same time, according to the mother’s place of residence, out of the total births, 13.79% of the births were rural and 86.21% were urban. In only 0.01% of the cases, delivery took place with the help of relatives or others. A doctor, nurse or a trained midwife was present in 99.68% of cases, and an untrained midwife or traditional birth attendant was available in 0.3% of cases.
Slight decline in death rate
Apart from this, the birth rate in Delhi city has increased from 14.24 per thousand in 2022 to 14.66 in 2023, while the death rate has also increased marginally from 6.07 to 6.16. Let us tell you that in the last few years, there has been a significant improvement in this figure.
